Mixing with Dynamics & Protector

Both Blue Cat’s Dynamics and Protector are incredible tools that can help you achieve the perfect mix you’re looking for. In the video below I use Dynamics extensively on all tracks and Protector on the master bus.

About Blue Cat’s Dynamics

Before we start using Blue Cat’s Dynamics we need to better understand what it’s made for. Blue Cat’s Dynamics is a full featured dynamics processor: it can be used as a compressor, limiter, gate, expander, waveshaper or all at once. It is a multi-purpose dynamics processor that is handy to have on every track to manage their dynamics (changes in volume and loudness over time).

In this video I used Dynamics mainly as a compressor to tame down some unwanted peaks on each track. A compressor controls the dynamic range of the audio signal by decreasing the difference in volume between the loudest and softest parts.

The end result is a more balanced sound on each track, while rather subtle on some tracks the end result gives a nice & balanced result.

By reducing some peaks you end up with more bandwidth on each track so the possibility to boost a lead track to stand out better in the mix. Dynamics has also a limiter so you can easily boost the track without clipping. You can hear each individual track separately in the middle of the video.

About Protector

Protector on the other hand acts as a brickwall limiter: it protects your audio output from overshoot, limits the general volume and helps you improve the perceived loudness. The result is a solid & louder mix. Happy listening!
